Full Biography
Canta Libre is a wonderfully unique chamber ensemble consisting of harp, flute and strings. This combination of instruments was extremely popular with French composers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and as such, Canta Libre specializes in a repertoire niche which truly brings the music and cultural atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Paris to audiences in the twenty-first century. The ensemble also performs music of the 21st century, and has become more active in commissioning living composers.
Literally translated, "Canta Libre" means to sing freely; that is precisely what this dedicated ensemble of musicians does with its repertoire of ravishing, arresting music that perfectly expresses the human passions, desires and feelings found beyond the realm of words.
Founded in 2002 and based on Long Island, New York, the group has shared its magic with audiences from Chicago to Southhampton, and has received such positive accolades as "completely enchanting" and "compelling sensitivity with stunning virtuosity" from appreciative audiences and music critics. Recent performance venues have included the Music Festival of the Hamptons, Concerts at Trinity Church in Manhattan, Barge Music of Brooklyn, the Salmagundi Art Club of Manhattan, as well as additional performances in Connecticut, Westchester County and on Long Island. Canta Libre was also recently featured on WLIW Channel 21 TV, and is celebrating their five year anniversary with a commission by ASCAP award winning composer, Jerry Ulrich.
Canta Libre's skilled musicians received their training at some of the finest conservatories in the world, including The Julliard School, New England Conservatory, The Peabody Institute, and The Moscow Conservatory. They have performed at major music festivals in Aspen, Spoleto and Tanglewood and now, as members of Canta Libre, are poised to bring their celebrated, lavish performances of quintet and trios for harp, flute and strings to many more communities.
